Helpful Terms and DefinitionsThis is a handy list of standard terms used when developing a website. If you have other questions or require more information about YourWebPro, please Ask a Question.
What is a web browser? The browser is a software application used for viewing information from the World Wide Web. Simply, it requests information from the Internet and displays the data on your computer. The most common web browsers used today are Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator.
What is a URL? URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator and is the address of a file on the Internet. For example, if you type http://www.yourwebpro.com into the address line of your browser window, your computer will go to that location.
What is HTML and do I need to know it? HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language) is the language, or code, used to build web pages. HTML uses standard tags to determine how a web page looks when your browser displays it. For example, these tags (text) will bold face the text they surround. You will not need to know any HTML if you work with YourWebPro. Our easy to use templates do all the work for you.
What are cookies? A cookie is a text file that is created and stored on your hard drive by the Internet server contacted by your browser. This text file is identified with the particular website and can hold any information. They are often used to personalize an experience and "remember" a user the next time they visit a site.
What is the difference between a .jpg and a .gif? JPEGs (pronounced "jay-peg") and gifs (pronounced "jif") are the most commonly used graphic file formats on the web. The .jpg compression file format allows you to save an image using millions of colors, while the .gif format restricts you to 256 colors. Typically, .gifs are used for illustrations, clip art and images with large areas of flat color. .jpgs are used for photographs and images with continuous tones.
What is web hosting? Web hosting is the storage of your web pages on a server.
How will I get my customers to visit my website? It is one thing to have a website, but another to have your customers find it and want to visit it. The saying "If you build it, they will come" just is not true on the Internet. Through email newsletters, search engine submission and other marketing tools, you can create visibility for your online presence. Our Customer Service Specialists can walk you through how to effectively use our suite of marketing tools to drive traffic to your site.
What are "hits"? "Hits" are the number of times a web page and the elements on that page are accessed. For example, if someone visits a web page on your site that has ten graphics on it, it counts as 11 hits -- one hit for the page itself and one hit for each graphic.
What is a "unique visitor"? Each time an individual visits your website, it counts as a unique visitor. If ten people visit your site, it will show as ten unique visitors. This is the most accurate way of measuring the usage of your site.
